1) Select a quote or phrase from one of the artist statements featured in Chapter 2 that you think is very different from how you think about making art, and describe how this idea is new and different to you.
2) What is the difference between denotation and connotation in terms of the interpretation of an artwork?
1. Both artists statements I found think fairly similar as me. But in Nicole Brugnoli's artist statement, she states "I use layering as metaphors for the human condition. Each layer is the transformation of an idea." I find a bit embarrassing that she actually has a reason of why she does layering, because unlike her, i just do it because i love the look of it and have no reason why i do that in many of my art pieces. But after thinking of why i actually do layering, its because i love to create illusions and like to distort objects by layering. So me and Nicole have different reasons why we layer in our artwork.
ReplyDelete2. The difference between denotation and connotation is the way you see the artwork. Denotation means what you literally see in front of you. You would mainly describe the the colors you see, the way it is painted and etc. Connotation means to interpret the artwork's meaning behind the actually artwork. More of meaning behind the reason why the artwork was created. Like what the mood it gives off, what the artwork is trying to represent and etc.
1) "Each layer is the transformation of an idea. I consistently leave exposed the first layer or mar to reveal stages of my process." This quote is from Nicole Brugnoli's artist statement. I found this very interesting and different from how how I work, she uses each layer like a building block but always showing the original "floor plan". I've layered before but never meaning to build of each layer, creating a transformation.
ReplyDelete2)Connotation is what is not right in front of you, you have to look deeper into the art work and almost assume what the artist is implying. Denotation is the obvious, what is right in front of you. You do not have to assume anything about the art work.

The artist statement that I find to be really different from the way that I view art is from Lauren Greenfield on her piece, "Girl Culture". It states, "I have been interested in documenting the pathological of everyday." When making art, I try to formulate an idea that evokes emotion for me and the viewer. I am not very concerned about traditional societal roles of the typical American, male or female. I think that it is a boring concept.
ReplyDeleteThere is a big difference between denotation and connotation. Denotation is what is you see; an objects face value. Connotation is the personal interpretation of the artist and viewer.
